Sea Monsters!

Our next topic is Sea Monsters. Check out the website below over the Easter holidays.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sn/prehistoric_life/dinosaurs/seamonsters/

The children will choose to specialise in one of the following creatures, so they will make the decision when they get back after Easter.

·         Sharks

·         Rays

·         Jellyfish

·         Whales

If you have any resources at home relating to Sea Creatures then we would be grateful if you could send them in. In the meantime and in the holidays, try and make a fruit salad sea creature, take a picture of it and send it it.

Journey, by Aaron Becker

We have had a lovely afternoon exploring the book 'Journey', an award winning book which tells a story of an ordinary girl who draws a magic door on her bedroom wall and goes on an exciting journey.  The book is wordless so we have been telling the story as a class and acting out the story in pairs.  I highly recommend this book!

Welcome Nibbles and stripy!

Yesterday we were lucky enough to have some visitors, they were Sophie's guinea pigs! Their visit was in aid of our science topic and this week we have been thinking about caring for animals.  This afternoon the children have been creating a poster about caring for animals.  Tomorrow, Miss Norman is bringing her tortoise, Fluffy!

Around the World!

Yesterday, the Infant School was a hub of excitement! In just one day the children flew around the school to learn about Mexico, Japan and South Africa.

At each destination they received a stamp in their passport!

Eclipse chalkings!

Mother's Day art

I hope the mums liked their Mother's Day cards from the children, here are some photos of them making them that we can finally share!

The Eclipse

This morning the children arrived and school and we got straight into getting excited about the eclipse!  We enjoyed watching some of the BBC coverage as well as enjoying a book Michael brought in about space.  We then went outside with our 'pin hole' viewers and the children were really sensible and sat with their back towards the sun looking at the moon cover the sun through their pin hole viewers!  Hopefully the children enjoyed the experience of being outisde and feeling it get colder and slightly darker!

We then returned inside to see what was happening on the Faroe Islands!

In between doing our spellings and a bit more mental maths practise we created some wonderful pieces of art!

Sunshine and Maths...

... The perfect combination!

We have been enjoying a fair bit of Maths and group reading outside this week, which has been lovely! Fingers crossed the sun will keep shining for the Easter break!

We have been focusing on mental maths skills this week, the below skills could be continued to be reinforced at home.

The children have also tried becoming best friends with a number.  With their number they have been looking at what the number is made up of and any patterns they notice when adding and taking away repeatedly.

John Dougherty!

On Tuesday morning, the author, John Dougherty, delighted us with a comical talk about his work and read an extract from Stinkbomb and Ketchup face and the badness of badgers.

He also sang a couple of his own compositions which were thoroughly entertaining!  See John in action in the video!

Britains National Bird

RBen talked about the current vote to find Britain a national bird for his show and tell.  It is easy to vote and the children said they would like to do it at home!

Meditation on a Monday

It seems like a long time ago now, but on Monday we had a visitor.  Justin Rodway, a parent from the Junior School, came to talk about being a Buddhist.  The children asked great questions and were really great at focussing when meditating.  Some of the children were too good, we couldn't stop them!

Some skills to work on...

Please use the pictures below to inspire some number skill practise. We will be returning to a big number focus in the next two week's and I think it would be most helpful for the children to have a look at some: partitioning, doubling, halving, adding two, two digit numbers together and multiplying by ten! ( if they aren't too busy pampering their Mum's this weekend of course!)

Phase 5 sound families

In our weekly spellings we focus on a range of sounds. If you wanted to work on any more at home, then I felt the below table was useful to look at alternative spellings.  After Easter, Year 2 will be looking more at word endings and exploring spelling rules.

About time!

Today we have returned to some time work the children will be working on three different activities over the next two days!

We played a great game to start us off today- see if the children can explain it to you at home!

Fantastic Frog Facts!

In Science today we have been looking at the life cycle of frogs.  We also used the iPads to research as much information we can about frogs!  Children will be selecting information to write in their own words,  after they have done lots of great research!

Artist of the Week!

Our second artist of the week from 2P is Jasmine, with her super sketch of the Artful Dodger!

A super start!

This morning, with the dinosaur group, we have been recapping all of the different 'a' sounds.  Does your child know these? Can they think of spellings for each sound like Lucas?

More fraction fun...

The class have been documenting their fraction work this week on large posters, they have worked brilliantly with their partners.  They have also had chance to work independently with fractions.  We will be continuing fraction work next week!

The work sheet photographed has been completed by some children, but it would be useful to have a look at and discuss at home if possible.  Finding a third of a number or a shape is more complicated than a half or quarter.  The children could use their number facts from the three times table to help them.

If they have completed this sheet already they could look at finding a third of different numbers or bigger shapes.

Any extra investigations at home with fractions would be really helpful for the children!

World Book Day Drama...

Yesterday afternoon we worked as a year group to create some scenes as our World Book Day characters.  The children worked in groups of four and were given different scenarios to create freeze frames from and then add dialogue.  The children worked together brilliantly and their freezes were so impressive!
