Poetry review

Already this morning we have dived deep into a world of poetry! 2p enjoyed taking a poetry quiz, turns out, the class are experts! The class spent some time exploring a range of poetry from a range of lovely poetry books we have here at school.  The children then chose their two favourite poems and filled in the review sheet below:

As well as having fun exploring poetry and the different styles of poetry, we discussed what a compound word is and started making a list of the ones we know!

Arrrr!!

Thomas is enjoying our pirate role play area!

It's that time of year!

Today we had our first summer concert rehearsal! We always have great fun rehearsing and for Year 2, it's always a special time during the build up to the concert!

We will be sending information home over half term about costume requirements but our theme is related to Roald Dahl, our next topic.

Good Morning Miss Goodgame!

This morning Ruth's name was pulled out of the pot to take the register! Ruth would make an excellent teacher!

Cracking coordinates!

2p have been introduced to coordinates today.  We have so far been reading coordinates of different charts and will progress to plotting our own.

If the children could explore some maps over the weekend or find some examples of coordinates in everyday life, it will help make our current maths focus more real!  As you have seen from the fruit kebab business idea they really get into topics they can relate to! Below is an example of something we did today.  I will send home an extra activity this evening if children would like to have a go at it and bring it back in tomorrow!

Explore, explore, explore...

As we continue to build on our number skills, we enjoyed investigating number bonds today.  We started with the bonds we know well including, bonds to 10, 20 and 100.  Then the children wanted to investigate their own bonds, including 30 and 1000.  They could continue this at home.  They should be really confident with recalling their number bonds to 10, 20 and 100 (e.g 30+100) and be able to use their number bonds to 10 to calculate quickly, mentally, what the bond to 36 might be, to get to 100.

Definitely an activity that can be done on the way to school!

Wonderful writing!

This morning we have been busy descriptive writing! We enjoyed watching a dive video and wrote as many interesting adjectives on our white boards as possible.  The children came up with some very impressive words! We have been choosing a particular species to write our best descriptions about, for  example:

'The colossal humpback whale comes closer slowly moving its huge flippers towards my neck, it's looking for thousands of tiny krill to feast on'

By Pallas

In the process, we have been learning some very interesting facts about sea creatures.  The children are now very good at recongnising onomatopoeia and alliteration, as well as being very confident using adverbs to make their verbs more interesting!

The Magic Box and writing

We have had a busy week of learning as usual! Yesterday the children had a chance to explore the poem, 'The Magic Box' by Kit Wright and enjoyed working as with members of 2W to develop a performance.

Next week we will be focussing on writing and are preparing to write a descriptive piece about what a deep sea diver might see on a tropical dive.  Children could have a go at home and practise using punctuation, adverbs for description and exciting adjectives!

Adaptations

We are looking at different adaptations of our chosen sea monsters! The children have been looking at close up pictures of sections of their sea creatures and sketching them.

At home, they could draw a clear picture of their sea creature and label it's different adaptations.  If the children can bring their picture in we can stick it in their topic book and award some stickers!

Delightful Dancing!

Miss Sampson was ill last week for the children's Dance lesson so I enjoyed an opportunity to have a dance with the children! We enjoyed a warm up to some different songs and explored different rhythms.  We then carried on working on the dance for the Summer Concert, it is looking amazing! Mrs White paid a visit and the children performed what they have done so far, she was amazed by the timing of the children and their energy!

Super show and tells!

The children have all been making a huge effort with their show and tells and I have been so impressed! Thank you for supporting them with this.  I will create a new show and tell timetable for after half term so that everyone can have another turn!

Last week Michael told the class about a book he has been writing, one that he has clearly worked hard on.  Rory also brought his rabbit, Woffles in on Friday! Both spoke very well and answered some interesting questions from the class.
